What does an AEO score actually measure?
An AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) score audits technical readiness — the on-page and crawl-layer signals that let an AI engine parse your business cleanly. A typical scoring system checks:

The 7 Gaps That Keep High-Scoring Sites Invisible
1. You have no entity graph outside your own site
AI engines cross-reference businesses against multiple sources before citing them. If your business only exists on yoursite.com, AI treats you as a single, unverified data point.
Fix: Build a consistent entity profile across these surfaces, with the exact same name, address, founder, and one-sentence description:
- Google Business Profile (claimed and verified)
- Wikidata entry (free to create, takes ~20 minutes)
- Crunchbase profile (free tier)
- LinkedIn Company page
- Better Business Bureau
- Industry-specific directories (Clutch, G2, Houzz, Avvo — depending on your vertical)
Then add every URL to your Organization JSON-LD sameAs array on your site. This explicitly tells AI engines, "All of these point to the same entity."
2. You're optimizing the homepage instead of building topical depth
AI engines cite the most authoritative page on a specific question, not the most well-decorated homepage.
If someone asks ChatGPT "What's the difference between AEO and SEO?" — the citation goes to whoever has the deepest, clearest, most-linked dedicated page on that exact question. Not your homepage with a paragraph mentioning it.
Fix: For every commercial keyword you care about, publish a standalone answer page of at least 1,200 words, structured like a definitive entry. Lead with the one-sentence answer, then provide context, examples, sources, and a comparison table.
3. You have FAQ schema but no answer-first content
A FAQPage schema block helps. It does not by itself produce citations. The body text needs to answer the question in the first one to two sentences, then expand.
Bad (won't get cited):
"Many businesses wonder about AEO. There are several factors at play. Let's explore them..."
Good (gets cited):
"Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website so AI engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity cite your business directly inside their answers. Unlike SEO, which optimizes for ranked links, AEO optimizes for direct citation."
The second version is what an AI engine extracts and quotes. The first is what gets ignored.
4. You have no E-E-A-T signals on the page itself
Google's E-E-A-T framework (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) is now actively replicated by every major AI engine. They look for:
- A real, named author with a bio and credentials

When someone asks an AI "Who are the best [X] in [city]?", the AI overwhelmingly pulls from third-party listicles — Forbes, local news, industry publications, Reddit threads, "Best of" award sites — not from individual business websites.
Fix: Get included in three to five third-party lists per quarter. Pitch trade publications. Submit to industry awards. Answer relevant Reddit threads with a transparent disclosure. Get featured in your local paper's "Best Of" issue. Each inclusion teaches AI you belong in that category.
6. Your content has no freshness signals

Fix: Every week, run your top 10 commercial queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. Document who is cited and where you appear. Track this as your real metric.

Case 1 — Orlando dental practice, scored 88, invisible to ChatGPT
